A Poetic Exploration of Subconscious Awareness

Even when my consciousness did not pick up on it 
Subconsciously I knew something wasn’t right.
You see, sleep is my form of intimacy.
If I could sleep next to you, that meant my soul trusted you.
If I could sleep next to you, then there was no need to worry.
It took me a while to put these pieces together
But now I know the ultimate test.
When I sleep I am telling you I have no fear
My mind is telling you that it feels safe to unwind,
Open its gate
Flaunt its flaws beautifully. 
I can’t fall asleep with just anyone because
Even if my consciousness hasn’t picked up on it yet
My subconscious has been alerted.
